&lt;p&gt;The impact of anthropogenic pressures on receiving environments and the governance of these impacts are central to the research conducted at Leesu under this theme. The studied receiving environments include &lt;strong&gt;rivers, water bodies, and urban and peri-urban soils&lt;/strong&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Particular attention is given to the evolution of the sanitary and environmental quality of these ecosystems. A unique aspect of the approaches taken is the combined consideration of the physical, biogeochemical, and ecological functioning of the ecosystems studied. In the face of these anthropogenic pressures, the resilience of urban receiving environments becomes a critical question. How will these ecosystems evolve under climate change and increasing anthropogenic pressure? How can they be better preserved? What solutions, and at what scales, can make them resilient? How can research findings be more effectively integrated into ecosystem restoration projects undertaken by operational actors (municipalities, companies, etc.)? What issues of territorial justice are raised by the transformation of these environments?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The objectives of this theme are to:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;ul class=&#034;spip&#034; role=&#034;list&#034;&gt;&lt;li&gt; evaluate the impact of anthropogenic pressures on receiving environments in metropolitan territories: soils, rivers, and water bodies;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt; analyze the evolution of pollutant concentrations and fluxes (organic micropollutants, trace metals, plastics), sanitary quality, and ecosystem functioning;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt; develop an integrated approach that considers the hydrodynamic, biogeochemical, ecological, and socio-political functioning of the ecosystems studied.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;

&lt;p&gt;This research theme, historically significant at Leesu, primarily focuses on the measurement and modeling of chemical and microbiological contaminants, as well as nutrients and their fluxes in urban areas.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The goal is to enhance understanding of the sources and fluxes of contaminants to ensure or develop specific anthropogenic uses of aquatic environments (e.g., swimming) and to protect ecosystems from inputs of organic matter (OM) and micropollutants. The methodologies are now mature, with notable examples including:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;ul class=&#034;spip&#034; role=&#034;list&#034;&gt;&lt;li&gt; the creation of operational tools for high-frequency monitoring of OM to optimize treatment processes in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs),&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt; the development of non-targeted screening methods for micropollutants, coupled with ecotoxicological approaches to assess the impact of urban discharges on receiving environments,&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt; the establishment of micropollutant observatories at the scale of the Paris metropolitan area (e.g., the City Observatory, prefigured by Leesu under the &lt;a href=&#034;https://www.leesu.fr/opur&#034;&gt;OPUR program&lt;/a&gt; and implemented by SIAAP).&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;
&lt;p&gt;New research will focus on studying different methods to reduce the transfer of micropollutants into the environment, particularly through &lt;strong&gt;reducing domestic usage&lt;/strong&gt; of chemical substances (practice changes). The evaluation of the efficiency and adaptability of centralized treatment facilities will continue, especially in light of the revision of the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive (UWWTD), which will require better characterization of &lt;strong&gt;quaternary treatments for micropollutant removal&lt;/strong&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Efforts to optimize wastewater and drinking water treatment processes, including the deployment of &lt;strong&gt;high-frequency OM characterization&lt;/strong&gt;, will also persist. Research into degradation products and ecotoxicology will continue, employing, for example, multi-model approaches to estimate the &lt;strong&gt;toxicity of urban wastewater&lt;/strong&gt; and accounting for &lt;strong&gt;antibiotic resistance&lt;/strong&gt; (via identifying responsible genes) that could arise from new disinfection processes.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Additional studies will focus on &lt;strong&gt;macroplastics&lt;/strong&gt;, precursors to microplastics, at the city scale, along with the &lt;strong&gt;additives&lt;/strong&gt; used in the composition of microplastics.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;In the context of global changes, it is essential to explore potential pathways for evolving sanitation systems to address the challenges of the 21st century. &lt;strong&gt;New approaches to managing water, nutrient flows, and pollutants&lt;/strong&gt; are being developed. These approaches aim to consider the recovery of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus resources currently found in wastewater and stormwater, leveraging their potential for climate change adaptation, while promoting alternative water resources to potable water, reducing energy consumption, and minimizing the environmental impact of urban systems.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;This theme focuses on the analysis of emerging socio-technical systems related to water and material management, along with their associated processes. It aims to evaluate their performance through an interdisciplinary approach, optimize their operation, and support their deployment. The new management models under study range from incremental to transformative shifts compared to dominant practices. They require changes in the practices of urban stakeholders (managers, developers, residents, associations, etc.), including: implementing source separation of urine and fecal matter for agricultural reuse; using or recycling non-conventional water resources at the parcel or neighborhood scale; and promoting source-based stormwater management.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;In the current &lt;strong&gt;wastewater management model&lt;/strong&gt; (&#034;everything down the drain&#034;), most urban effluents are collected and directed to treatment plants where they are processed. This approach is predominantly linear, with nitrogen primarily denitrified and released into the atmosphere, and with only 4% being recycled in the &#206;le-de-France region, even though the excretions of its residents could cover the region's fertilizer needs. Urine has the advantage of containing most of the excreted nutrients. Moreover, it is generally low in pathogenic and metal contamination, although the question of pharmaceutical contaminants remains. Various treatments can be applied to urine to produce different &lt;strong&gt;urine-based fertilizers&lt;/strong&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The &lt;a href=&#034;https://www.leesu.fr/ocapi/les-projets/agrocapi/&#034;&gt;Agrocapi project&lt;/a&gt; (APR Graine 2018) demonstrated the strong potential of urine-based fertilizers to increase agricultural resilience and reduce its environmental footprint. Building on Agrocapi's findings, the FreezePee project aims to establish a new &lt;strong&gt;inventory of existing and emerging urine valorization pathways&lt;/strong&gt; in agriculture and evaluate them.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Ultimately, in alignment with the &lt;a href=&#034;https://www.leesu.fr/ocapi&#034;&gt;OCAPI research-action program&lt;/a&gt;, this project seeks to support the emergence of the most relevant human urine valorization pathways tailored to different territorial contexts. Positioned at the intersection of multiple disciplines (agronomy, environmental science, process engineering, etc.), this project brings together multidisciplinary and complementary research teams along with non-scientific partners.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;A comprehensive literature review compiling current knowledge will be conducted and supplemented by an evaluation of emerging pathways. Particular attention will be given to the three major challenges highlighted in the Agrocapi project: achieving &lt;strong&gt;low-energy urine concentration&lt;/strong&gt;, minimizing nitrogen volatilization, and improving understanding of the fate of organic micropollutants.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Experiments will be conducted on recent advancements in &lt;strong&gt;nutrient concentration through freezing&lt;/strong&gt;, new nitrogen stabilization methods (acidification, passive nitrification), and the fate of micropollutants. The anticipated new urine-based fertilizers include acidified granulated urine (&#034;granurin&#034;) and fertilizers derived from freezing processes (some of which will be produced ad hoc following passive nitrification). These products will be characterized (nutrient concentrations, composition, pharmaceutical residues), particularly through field trials (agronomic interest, ammoniacal nitrogen volatilization). Their production chains will also be analyzed (energy and water consumption, avoided pollution, etc.).&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Finally, the project aims to promote the dissemination of alternative solutions by showcasing its results through the creation of a &lt;strong&gt;pedagogical demonstrator&lt;/strong&gt;, highlighting the challenges and solutions available and presenting the pathways studied within this project.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;h4 class=&#034;spip&#034;&gt;1. Context and proposal&lt;/h4&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The quality of aquatic environments and water resources can be assessed through their &lt;strong&gt;chemical contamination&lt;/strong&gt;, particularly by emerging contaminants, or through the &lt;strong&gt;biodiversity&lt;/strong&gt; they support. The presence of contaminants (e.g., pesticides, biocides, pharmaceuticals, industrial or household products, etc.) negatively affects ecosystem health, causing harm to aquatic organisms, biodiversity loss, and human health issues, such as degraded water quality for drinking water production and increased risks of antibiotic resistance.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;To characterize chemical contamination in aquatic environments, non-targeted analysis methods using high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) have been developed to capture &lt;strong&gt;chemical fingerprints of organic contaminants&lt;/strong&gt; in samples. At Leesu, two doctoral theses have explored this topic: the first (&lt;a href=&#034;https://www.leesu.fr/opur/these-de-nina-huynh&#034;&gt;Nina Huynh&lt;/a&gt;) focused on developing the analytical method and applying it to analyze pollutants in various urban waters, particularly within wastewater treatment processes. The second thesis (&lt;a href='https://www.leesu.fr/sade-julien' class=&#034;spip_in&#034; hreflang=&#034;fr&#034;&gt;Julien Sade&lt;/a&gt;), initiated as part of the &lt;a href='https://www.leesu.fr/meseine-innovation' class=&#034;spip_in&#034; hreflang=&#034;fr&#034;&gt;MeSeine Innovation program&lt;/a&gt;, aimed to develop advanced computational tools for data processing, using numerical and statistical approaches to link detected chemical signals to the measured toxicity of Seine River water samples impacted by urban discharges.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;In parallel, the study of &lt;strong&gt;environmental DNA (eDNA)&lt;/strong&gt; &#8212; capturing signals from macro- and microorganisms in the environment through water samples &#8212; has become increasingly used for monitoring biodiversity. At Leesu, such metagenomic analysis methods were applied in the &lt;a href='https://www.leesu.fr/soutenance-de-these-de-sadia-bagagnan-30-janvier-2024' class=&#034;spip_in&#034; hreflang=&#034;fr&#034;&gt;thesis of Sadia Bagagnan&lt;/a&gt;, enabling precise characterization of bacterial communities in the Seine. These studies revealed the dynamics of these communities under various anthropogenic pressures (e.g., urban discharges, wastewater disinfection treatments) and seasonal or climatic variations.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Recent technological advances allow for the recording of chemical fingerprints using non-targeted approaches and the measurement of environmental DNA for biodiversity analysis, generating vast amounts of data. The challenge lies in developing multivariate analysis tools to facilitate the use of these datasets. Digital tools are increasingly being applied to process and interpret HRMS spectra of contaminants in water, as well as environmental DNA to extract biodiversity indicators or explain spatial and temporal variability.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Combining these two approaches offers a promising path to characterize complex chemical mixtures while simultaneously analyzing their effects and impacts on ecosystems.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h4 class=&#034;spip&#034;&gt; 2. Objectives&lt;/h4&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The overall objective of this project is to evaluate the feasibility of jointly interpreting HRMS chemical fingerprints of water contaminants with biodiversity data provided by eDNA or microbial biodiversity analyses, by developing and applying numerical methods.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;More specifically, the aims are to:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Adapting cities to global change, and in particular to climate change, which is putting increasing pressure on surface and groundwater resources, is creating new challenges that will require far reaching changes in the way urban water systems are managed. The current system of segmented management of surface and underground aquatic environments, drinking water, wastewater and stormwater will not be able to meet the coupled challenges of securing water supplies, resilience to extreme climatic events and preservation of aquatic ecosystems in the city of tomorrow. New concepts of integrated urban water management have emerged. Recent trends aim to achieve greater water circularity in cities. This involves rethinking the way we manage excreta (separation and recovery at source) outside the water management system, mobilizing alternative water resources (rainwater harvesting, grey water recycling) to cope with increased drought and meet new needs (urban agriculture, urban cooling), and deploying at-source stormwater management to respond to rainfall extremes and soil water recharge.&lt;br class='autobr' /&gt;
While some of the proposed solutions (e.g. at-source stormwater management, separation and recovery of excreta and grey water) have already been technically assessed, this assessment remains partial, generally on a project scale, and segmented in terms of issues. These solutions have not yet been evaluated on a &lt;strong&gt;city-wide, integrated scale&lt;/strong&gt;. Their coherence, complementarity or competition, or their conditions of articulation with the pre-existing system, still need to be analyzed in order to assess their contribution to the development of a new paradigm. &lt;br class='autobr' /&gt;
Integrated modeling of different innovation deployment scenarios is required to assess their impact on a city-wide scale. The following impacts will need to be taken into account: impact on the quantity and quality of water resources, environmental impacts, impacts on comfort and urban amenity, energy balance, economic viability. &lt;br class='autobr' /&gt;
Particular attention must also be paid to the consequences of disseminating decentralized innovations on the operation of existing urban water systems (drinking water and wastewater networks, treatment plants, etc.). The modeling approach will also enable us to assess deployment scenarios in terms of the &lt;strong&gt;city resilience to global changes&lt;/strong&gt; (climate change, urban densification, population growth, regulations, etc.).&lt;br class='autobr' /&gt;
While many models exist, each representing a part of the urban water management system (drinking water or wastewater or stormwater), or a specific issue (hydrology, pollutant flows, urban climate, energy, economy), the development of an integrated modeling framework remains a challenge. Different types of models need to be considered: systems modeling to describe the interactions, at city scale, of the various components of the urban water system (drinking water, wastewater and runoff, water resources); physical and/or conceptual models to describe processes linked to hydrology (evaporation, evapotranspiration, exchanges with surface and underground receiving environments) and pollutant flows. &lt;br class='autobr' /&gt;
Representing socio-technical innovations and their impacts on a city scale means rethinking the modeling of urban water management systems: imagining the city(ies) of the future in terms of different socio-economic trajectories, conceptualizing city evolution scenarios, coupling different modeling approaches and spatial resolutions.&lt;br class='autobr' /&gt;
In addition, the emergence of new knowledge and observation techniques over the last decade has revolutionized environmental measurement and the characterization of urban space. Open access to high-frequency datasets and digital data portals (e.g. satellite images or climate model outputs) is enabling a breakthrough in the implementation of city-scale modeling. These data require validation, analysis and processing methods that differ from those available on the market to date. They also enable innovative modeling approaches to be developed, taking into account the heterogeneity of the urban system and the diversity of solutions used for urban water management.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h3 class=&#034;spip&#034;&gt;Job content&lt;/h3&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The person recruited will join the group of Leesu researchers working on the urban water system. His/her research will be part of a high-level national (SNO Observil, Urbis, ZA Seine) and international network. The researcher recruited will be responsible for developing tools to model the deployment of innovations and their impacts on a city scale. He/she will coordinate the construction and evaluation of different scenarios for integrated urban water management in a context of ecological transition. This recruitment will strengthen Leesu's modeling resources and enable it to assert and develop the skills required to play an active part, in the optimization of the urban water system, in the emergence of the city of tomorrow, which will be a resilient city with a low environmental footprint.&lt;br class='autobr' /&gt;
The researcher will be keen to establish or pursue collaborations within Paris-Est Sup, the IPP (Institut Polytechnique de Paris) and with external French, European or international partners.&lt;br class='autobr' /&gt;
Research work will be carried out within the framework of existing or future programs and projects. In the latter case, the researcher will be involved in or may be entrusted with setting up projects (in particular, scientific content and resources to be implemented). The researcher may also be involved in training and teaching activities relating to his/her areas of expertise.&lt;br class='autobr' /&gt;
Finally, the researcher is expected to invest in supporting ENPC students (courses, projects, scientific internships), and in introducing them to the issues involved in managing the urban water system in a context of ecological transition.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;I am delighted to announce my upcoming thesis defense, entitled &#8220;&lt;i&gt;Utilization of performic acid in urban wastewater treatment: reactivity with organic micropollutants and integration strategies within advanced oxidation processes&lt;/i&gt;&#8221; scheduled for &lt;strong class=&#034;caractencadre-spip spip&#034;&gt;Wednesday, December 20th, at 2 pm&lt;/strong&gt; at Cr&#233;teil.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The thesis defense will take place in a hybrid format, including an on-site segment at the &lt;strong&gt;MIEE amphitheater&lt;/strong&gt; (Maison de l'Innovation et de l'Entrepreneuriat Etudiant), located at Rue Po&#232;te et Sellier, 94000 Cr&#233;teil (next to metro station 8 Cr&#233;teil Universit&#233;, as highlighted in the attached &lt;a href='https://www.leesu.fr/IMG/bmp/upec-map-mail-des-meches-2023.bmp' class=&#034;spip_in&#034; type='image/x-ms-bmp'&gt;map&lt;/a&gt;).
